I am always trying to top and yes, sometimes topple, myself and the pieces I make. This project is one of the biggest things I’ve embarked on so far and I am excited and nervous for its success.
From a sculptural/earthworks standpoint, this is the largest physical mark I’ve made on the earth thus far. I am intrigued by the visual of building by excavating and making something which is so much larger than I ever could be.
The performance aspect, in which I am decidedly not performing, but am actually toiling, is of utmost importance to get to the heart of the work. I am trying to find the elusive and authentic through meditative and hard-earned effort.
In building a trench, I am taking a piece of military architecture and coaxing it into a neverending circle. Each circle of trench will make a ring around the initial hole, like a radar pulse, ultimately turning these structures of camouflage and safety into an actual target. The irony is not lost on me.
Community. Many, many people, some even strangers to me, are pitching in to help me out on my quixotic journey. A deep sense of gratitude and enormous huggs to all of you who have given me love, land, shelter, equipment or well wishes. Also, this piece will culminate in a multimedia film showing sometime… later…
The final reason why… I guess I have to be at least a little bat-shit crazy to do this. So be it.
Off I go!
